BIOGRAPHIES
Ledah Finck, Maura Shawn Scanlin, and Willa Finck all started playing violin in Spring 1999 with their first teacher, “Miss Nan” Stricklen, of Banner Elk, North Carolina. They currently study classical violin with Dr. Nancy Bargerstock of Appalachian State University and are all first violinists in the collegiate ASU Symphony Orchestra. The girls began playing fiddle music early on, and over the years have continued to expand and refine their Celtic repertoire by attending a variety of fiddle camps in Cape Breton, North Carolina, and Virginia. Their Celtic music influences include the late Jerry Holland, Kimberly Fraser, Jamie Laval, Natalie MacMaster, Kevin Burke, Martin Hayes, John Turner, Alasdair Fraser, and many other fine musicians.

MAURA SHAWN SCANLIN also studies piano and cello, and
enjoys other activities such as swimming, soccer, gardening, hiking, biking, drawing, running, and reading. Her musical honors include; first place in the Junior Division of the 2009 Music Academy of North Carolina's 10th Annual Cello and Violin Competition (Greensboro), Strings Category winner in the Junior Division of the 2009 Charlotte Symphony Guild's Young Artists Competition, and first place in the Junior Division of the 2010 Charlotte Symphony Guild's Young Artist Competition, where she appeared as a soloist. Maura Shawn is a U.S. National Scottish Fiddling Champion, Junior Division and has won Appalachian State University's Old Time Fiddler's Convention in 2009 and 2010, Junior Division, and in 2009 she won the Boone, NC Fiddling Competition. Maura Shawn is also a member of the Junior Appalachian Musician's Program in Boone, NC, where she assists in the teaching of fiddle classes, and studies guitar.

WILLA FINCK loves reading, badminton, listening to music, and playing soccer. She was selected as a first violinist in the North Carolina Western Regional Junior All-State Honors Orchestra in 2009 and 2010. In addition to violin, Willa played viola in her middle school orchestra and will continue to play viola with the high school orchestra next year. Willa won first place in the Junior Division in the 2010 Music Academy of North Carolina Strings Competition (Greensboro). |

LEDAH FINCK was selected as a first violinist in the high school North Carolina All-State Honors High School Orchestra in 2009 and 2010. In addition to violin, she is first-chair cellist in her school's honors orchestra and also plays flute and piano. Ledah is a member of her school's cross-country team, and enjoys drawing, reading, and writing. Among her awards, Ledah was a finalist in the 2010 North Carolina Symphony Concerto Competition, Junior Division; took second place in her division in the 2008 Music Academy of North Carolina Strings Competition (Greensboro); and won Best in Category for the 2010 Charlotte Youth Symphony Concerto Competition, Senior Division. |
